Text message alerts

GlucoseLens is a service of Huckleberry Lane Labs LLC.

GlucoseLens can send a text when a glucose reading crosses a threshold and is still moving. Messages go to a person the account holder nominates — often themselves, often someone they trust to help them keep an eye on things. This page explains exactly what is sent, how often, who agrees to what, and how to stop.

Not a safety or emergency system

These texts are not a safety or emergency system. They depend on a background sync that runs every few minutes and can be late, delayed, or skipped, and they may not arrive at all. Do not rely on them for low glucose or any urgent situation. For real-time alarms, use Nightscout's own alarm settings or your CGM's native alerts, which run on your device and do not depend on this app.

Nominate someone for text alerts

Include the country code, starting with a plus sign.

Used only in the message asking them to agree. A first name is enough, and is safer if a digit is mistyped.

You will be asked to sign in to finish. A number is only ever stored against the account it belongs to.

What you will receive

  • Glucose threshold alerts: when a reading is at or above 200 mg/dL and rising, or at or below 90 mg/dL and falling.
  • Morning check-in: One text each morning: how the night went, and whether carbs have been entered yet today. Only if the account holder turns it on.
  • Daily summary: One text each evening: how much of the day was in range, how meals went, and any lows or long highs. Only if the account holder turns it on.
  • All clear after a low: One text when a low you were alerted about is over. Only if the account holder turns it on.
  • One message with a link, when a number is first nominated, so the person holding it can decide for themselves.

An alert states the reading, whether it is rising or falling, and a link to review it in the app. A morning check-in, daily summary or all clear states what the readings showed. No text tells you what to do about it, and GlucoseLens never recommends a dose, a correction, or a treatment.

How often

Message frequency varies with your glucose, and with the interval set for your number. Most people receive a few messages per week. A single prolonged high or low can repeat at that interval until the reading comes back into range, so a difficult day may bring a dozen or more.

These limits are enforced by the app:

  • Never more than one alert of the same kind within 10 minutes, whatever else is happening.
  • After an alert, the next alert of that kind waits for the interval set for your number, which the account holder chooses. It is shortened only if the reading gets significantly worse, or while it is falling fast.
  • A reading that stays high or low without moving does not repeat an alert.
  • Once a reading comes back into range, the next excursion can alert straight away.
  • Morning check-in: Never more than one per day.
  • Daily summary: Never more than one per day.
  • All clear after a low: Never more than one per low alert situation.

Cost

Message and data rates may apply. GlucoseLens does not charge for text messages; your mobile carrier may.

Stopping and getting help

Text STOP to any message to stop all texts immediately, without asking anyone first. Stopping is permanent for that number: to receive texts again the number has to be nominated again and agreed to again from a fresh link. The account holder can also remove a number at any time in Settings.

Who agrees, and how

The account holder chooses who receives these messages, but they cannot agree on that person's behalf. Nominating a number sends exactly one message to it: a short note saying who asked for the alerts and a link to a page written for the person receiving them.

That page explains what will be sent and how often, and asks them to agree for themselves. Until they do, nothing further is sent to the number. If they would rather not, they can decline on that page or reply STOP, and the number is discarded.

Anyone receiving these messages is seeing another person's glucose readings. That is the point of the feature, and it is why the person holding the phone is the one who decides.

Consent is optional

Agreeing to texts is not required to use GlucoseLens, and Huckleberry Lane Labs LLC does not sell or share your phone number with anyone. See the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
